Sports Injuries

Sports injuries come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Sports injuries are often stubborn, frustrating, and if the patient sees the wrong provider, they are met with a prescription to rest. Which we know does nothing.

Some may not first think of a chiropractic or physical therapy clinic as their first stop for a sports injury, but it should be. As a highly trained movement and musculoskeletal specialist, our sports chiropractic clinic excels in helping you get back to your sport while minimizing time off and helping you become better than before.

Many athletes are unaware of how their injury occurred; they just know they can't perform.

Participating in a sport, any sport, has its own inherent risk. As an athlete, our goal is to go out and perform our best, and be able to walk off of the field/track/pitch after, with our heads held high. Unfortunately, a wrong turn, missed call, or pushing a bit too far can spell disaster.

Though associated with participating in a sport, sports injuries refer to injuries of the musculoskeletal system and usually involve an extremity. Injuries to a shoulder, hip, knee, or ankle tend to be more common in the athletic population, but the injuries encountered are categorized below.

STRAIN: A strain is a 'pull' or tear of muscle tissue, including the tendon attachments, in response to an over-stretching during running, jumping, or another dynamic movement.

SPRAIN: A sprain is a 'pull' or tear of ligaments. Ligaments give external support to a joint, and injury here can cause temporary and long-term stability issues.

FRACTURES & JOINT DISLOCATIONS: These are emergency conditions and should immediately seek care with an emergency care provider. Our role is to help you rehab and return to sport after the all-clear from your orthopedist.

The most common sports injuries are often preventable

While data tells us that the most common sports injuries are ankle sprains, groin pull, hamstring strain, shin splints, ACL tear, knee patellofemoral syndrome, and tennis elbow, in that order.

The truth is that, while some require outside interference, these injuries are mostly preventable. The reason this is true is that most injuries have some OVERUSE component to them.

What do we mean by overuse?

  • Overuse injuries are often from doing too much too soon. Meaning, an athlete tries to perform a feat that their body was not adequately prepared to handle.

  • Overuse injuries break down the tissues (muscle, ligament, bone) faster than they can adapt and rebuild.

  • Overuse injuries can be prevented with proper training, programming, and recovery.

More common injuries related to overuse include rotator cuff injuries, shin splints, IT band syndrome, runners knee, and plantar fasciitis. While these are problems on their own, left unattended, they could last years and even cause much more severe injuries.

How Revive Sport & Spine accesses sports injuries

A true sports assessment is the key to coming back from an injury faster.

Most sports injuries are multifactorial, meaning there is more than one cause.

Our chiropractic assessment process aims to find the breakdown, or multiple breakdowns, that led to your injury.

Our initial evaluation contains a detailed history and examination related to your problem, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

From here, we utilize a system of functional movement assessments to find breakdowns in your biomechanics and uncover the things you can't see that are contributing to your problems.

The four sports assessments we use are:

SFMA - Selective Functional Movement Assessment

The SFMA is a clinical assessment used to assist in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders by identifying dysfunctions in a movement. When pain is present, we utilize this tool. Once the problem is uncovered and corrected, we move on to the FMS to further develop movement, stability, and strength.

FMS - Functional Movement Screen

The Functional Movement Screen is a tool used to evaluate the seven fundamental movement patterns necessary for optimal sports and life performance. This screen is used once we have achieved pain-free status from a musculoskeletal injury.

TPI - Titleist Performance Institute Assessment

The TPI assessment is a 16-point physical and biomechanical screen. It is a comprehensive assessment of mobility, strength, and functional movement patterns specific to the golf swing.

The screen can identify restrictions in your body movement that can reflect in your swing, causing mid-hits, dissatisfaction, and pain. Once we uncover these movement restrictions, we can accurately develop a program to eliminate your pain and improve your game.

Whether you are a beginner or a scratch golfer, you will greatly benefit from this program.

Runners Readiness Assessment

Over the year, we have helped thousands of runners and triathletes get back on track with their training and have their best races yet.

During this time, we have developed our own specific assessment that looks at the needs of endurance athletes and helps us pick up on the little things that cause big problems later.

Our approach to helping you return to your sport, better than before.

Every athlete performs differently; your treatment plan should be the same.

When an athlete comes through our doors, we first must assess their movement and find the underlying cause of their complaint.

Once we achieve this, we can develop a specific plan that addresses the soft tissues involved, normalize and stabilize the joint mobility need for their sport, and exercise rehabilitation that mimics their sport and helps them excel and prevent future injury.

Here’s what athletes from the Midvale, Utah area have to say about Revive Sports & Spine:

I am a trail runner/peak bagger and had been dealing with an extremely painful foot injury and tight calf issue for 6 months. After months of trying different things and losing hope, I stumbled upon some local ultra runners that raved about Revive Sport & Spine. Dr. Reheisse set me up with a strength and balance program coupled with dry needling, and it gave me the exact results I have been hoping for since last spring. Within the first couple sessions and weeks of exercises, the results were there. The staff is fantastic, friendly, and makes every visit easy. Dr. Reheisse is extremely knowledge and the guy I trust for dry needling. Would recommend to anyone who has pain or injury they can’t figure out, or for general maintenance if you are an athlete. A+++ Thank you.
