What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic treatment offers a wide range of services designed to help patients suffering from pain and injury return to an active, pain-free lifestyle.
A common misconception about chiropractic care is that it only involves spinal adjustments. In reality, it is a profession dedicated to treating and recovering from any musculoskeletal injuries.
At Revive Sport and Spine in Midvale, Utah, we have a team of evidence-based chiropractors and trainers trained in various treatment techniques to address a variety of injuries. This includes chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue (muscle) work, and personalized rehab plans. We specialize in the conservative management of all injuries, providing a natural recovery alternative centered around movement, exercise, and hands-on therapy, preventing unnecessary surgical interventions or reliance on medications. Our services are tailored to help active individuals return to their favorite activities, pain-free.
What is a chiropractic adjustment or chiropractic spinal manipulation?
The chiropractic adjustment, or spinal manipulation, is a technique designed to restore movement to a fixated joint, helping to return it to normal function and motion. This approach is particularly beneficial for those seeking a natural and effective approach to back pain, neck pain, and other musculoskeletal injuries to ensure they are not held back by pain or limited mobility.
How does a chiropractic adjustment help me?
The chiropractic adjustment is by far the most synonymous treatment with chiropractic care. We are often asked how it is used, how it helps patients with pain, and if it is suitable for everyone.
Chiropractic adjustment is a very powerful tool that we use for most of our patients. The goal of the adjustment is simple. Restore proper motion to an area that has been compromised. When one of our doctors evaluates you for an adjustment, they will palpate (push) your spine and feel for any joint dysfunction or lack of motion. Joint dysfunction can occur from an injury, muscular imbalances, sitting with poor posture, or many other causes.
When there is joint dysfunction in the spine, it means that the joint does not move the way it was designed to. You can picture it as being restricted or “stuck.” When we adjust or manipulate the areas with aberrant motion, we reintroduce the proper joint motion and mechanics. This allows the body to have proper biomechanics and will enable you to move better, often providing immediate relief. Please watch the following short video for more information on why and how a chiropractic adjustment is performed.
Will a chiropractic adjustment cause discomfort?
Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours. In many cases, such as lower back or neck pain, chiropractic care may be the primary treatment method. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal pain associated with the condition.

What to expect at your first Revive Sport & Spine chiropractic appointment.
If you have never been to a chiropractor before, you may not know what to expect on your first visit. Fortunately, we are here to guide you through every step of the process, from pain to performance.
At your first appointment, you will be greeted at the front desk by our caring and helpful office manager, Jandi. Then, you will be brought into a treatment room for a history and exam by our team of chiropractic and training professionals. We begin every new patient exam with an in-depth health history to establish a clear understanding of any medical events that could be contributing to your chief complaint or a contraindication to your care.
We then perform a detailed history specific to the chief complaint that brought you into the office. At this time, you can provide us with any additional information or medical studies that may be pertinent to your case, such as radiology reports or diagnostic imaging. Once we have a thorough understanding of what you are dealing with, we will help establish goals for your recovery. At Revive Sport and Spine, not only do we want to help you get out of pain, but we also want to help you achieve all of your health and fitness goals.
After completing your thorough history, we will take you through a series of neurological, orthopedic, and functional movement tests to help us determine what treatment will yield the best results for your individual case.
Based on the results of the examination, the doctor will create a report of their findings for discussion. Our recommended treatment tools will then be explained and performed. Once treatment is complete, the doctor will discuss the projected timeline for recovery, expected progressions, and when you should schedule your next appointment.
Our flexible appointment times are designed to accommodate your busy schedule. We encourage patients to schedule 2-3 appointments out in order to get their preferred appointment times. We look forward to serving you and helping you get back to the activities you enjoy.

RESEARCH: Effectiveness of Chiropractic care
Spinal Manipulation: Who Are The Best Candidates For Care?
Research has continued to support spinal manipulation as a non-invasive, safe, and effective care option for spine and pain complaints such as low back pain, sciatica, neck pain, and headaches. As further research is being conducted, we now have great prediction rules that best help us understand which patients and complaints will benefit best. Chiropractic care for Acute & Chronic complaints.
“Patients with chronic low-back pain treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement and satisfaction at one month than patients treated by family physicians. Satisfaction scores were higher for chiropractic patients. A higher proportion of chiropractic patients (56 percent vs. 13 percent) reported that their low-back pain was better or much better, whereas nearly one-third of medical patients reported their low-back pain was worse or much worse.” - Nyiendo et al (2000), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
In a Randomized controlled trial, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise), or general practitioner care (counseling, education, and drugs) in a 52-week study. The clinical outcomes measures showed that manual therapy resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, the total costs of the manual therapy-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care. – Korthals-de Bos et al (2003), British Medical Journal
Chiropractic care when compared with other traditional treatments.
Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.” – Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
“In our randomized, controlled trial, we compared the effectiveness of manual therapy, physical therapy, and continued care by a general practitioner in patients with nonspecific neck pain. The success rate at seven weeks was twice as high for the manual therapy group (68.3 percent) as for the continued care group (general practitioner). Manual therapy scored better than physical therapy on all outcome measures. Patients receiving manual therapy had fewer absences from work than patients receiving physical therapy or continued care, and manual therapy and physical therapy each resulted in statistically significant less analgesic use than continued care.” - Hoving et al (2002), Annals of Internal Medicine
Chiropractic care is an effective option for Headaches.
“Cervical spine manipulation was associated with significant improvement in headache outcomes in trials involving patients with neck pain and/or neck dysfunction and headache.” – Duke Evidence Report, McCrory, Penzlen, Hasselblad, Gray (2001)
“The results of this study show that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches. . . Four weeks after cessation of treatment . . . the patients who received spinal manipulative therapy experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in all major outcomes in contrast to the patients that received amitriptyline therapy, who reverted to baseline values.” – Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Boline et al. (1995)
Cost Effectiveness
“Chiropractic care appeared relatively cost-effective for the treatment of chronic low-back pain. Chiropractic and medical care are performed comparably for acute patients. Practice-based clinical outcomes were consistent with systematic reviews of spinal manipulative efficacy: manipulation-based therapy is at least as good as and, in some cases, better than other therapies.” - Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
"Reduced odds of surgery were observed for...those whose first provider was a chiropractor. 42.7% of workers [with back injuries] who first saw a surgeon had surgery, in contrast to only 1.5% of those who saw a chiropractor." – Keeney et al (2012), Spine
